Migraines and Mental Health

Migraines extend beyond physical pain, impacting daily life and emotional well-being. Here are some tips about supporting your mental health as a person living with migraine.

Top Tip: Help your loved ones understand how they can support you

If you’re struggling, you’re not alone. Help educate your loved ones about migraine and your specific condition and share how that impacts your mental health.

Suggest with them ways that they can support you when you’re feeling down.

Even suggest they listen to The Heads Up Podcast with Dr Munro about Migraines and Mental Health, find it here

Tips For Supporting Your Mental Wellbeing:

  • Mindfulness and Meditation- Mindfulness is about focusing your attention on the present moment, without judgment. Try to find a quiet space, focus on your breath, and notice your body sensations. Meditation can help reduce stress, anxiety, and improve overall mood.

  • Try To Exercise Regularly- Physical activity releases endorphins, which have mood-boosting effects. Even gentle exercise like walking or swimming can make a difference. It’s important to listen to your body and avoid overexerting yourself.

  • Prioritize Sleep- Aim for consistent sleep patterns by establishing a relaxing bedtime routine. Create a sleep-conducive environment, free from distractions like electronic devices and don’t have caffeine past midday. Sufficient sleep is crucial for both physical and mental well-being.

  • Try Expressive Writing- Journaling can be a therapeutic outlet for processing emotions and reducing stress. This technique is discussed on the Heads Up Podcast. Writing freely about your thoughts and feelings can help you gain perspective and clarity.

  • Seek Community Support- Connecting with others who understand your experience can be invaluable. Join support groups or online communities to share your feelings and learn from others in the same boat. There are so many creators living with migraine who share their experiences on social media.

  • Professional Help- If you’re feeling overwhelmed or struggling to cope, don’t hesitate to seek professional help. Mind and Young Mind are both incredible organisations with invaluable support.
