You’re having one of the worst migraines of your life. But sometimes they pass. Will it pass this time? Should you go to the ER? How are you supposed to know what’s ER-worthy? Here are a couple of questions to ask yourself when you’re in severe pain:
Should You Go to the ER?
- Is this the worst headache you’ve ever had? Or close to it?
- Are you seeing double, or having any unusual problems with your vision?
- Are you slurring speech, feeling like you can’t get your words out, or unable to clearly communicate?
- Can you stand up straight? Do you feel unusually dizzy, wobbly or off balance?
- Did a migraine start suddenly and forcefully, with no prior warning or lead up?
- Did you recently start a new treatment plan?
- Do you have a gut feeling that this one just feels different?
If you’re not sure or feeling nervous, you can give the doctor/nurse hotline on your insurance a call to ask. You can find this number on your insurance website or on the back of your insurance card. If you don’t have insurance, you can also call the ER directly with your symptoms to ask if you should come in. These are commons questions, and you’ll feel better having an experienced practitioner guide you. The rule of thumb is: don’t chance it. If this migraine feels unusually worse or different, have someone take you to the emergency room.
